Liverpool is one of those places that exudes cool and actually sets the tone for many of today’s hottest trends. From Liverpool Fashion Week, to the club scene, the music scene or just plain being seen, Liverpool oozes style and culture.

This is a crowd that lives to dress up and step out. It’s all about the hair, the makeup, the clothes and of course, the perfect shoes!

We caught up with our resident Liverpool trendsetter, Jason Hamilton from ALDO, to find out what those who are in the know are wearing...

Jason, tell us, what are the hottest styles in store right now?

"Nieves is a must! Girls here love to get dressed up, whether it’s for a night on the town or a day in the city, which is probably why everyone gravitates toward this style. It’s got all the flash, plus the comfort! That alone makes it a winner. When you’re out and about into the wee hours, you want to look good and feel comfortable. Plus, everyone is into heels! And weather doesn’t matter either, this sandal looks incredible with tights in bright colors – it really makes them pop!"

"This boot is a great transition piece from fall into winter’s chill. They’ve got that perfect mix of dressiness and casual luxury. You can wear them with pretty much anything and they’re ideal for a stroll in the city or a night out. Oh and everyone here is opting for the pointy toe. It’s a major trend with young and old alike. Style knows no age! I think this one is going to be a favourite throughout the season, thanks to its butter-soft leather and warm lining, an unexpected addition to a dress boot."

"Brevalan is fast becoming a style staple with all the guys. It’s just one of those great, easy slip-on dress shoes; all the style, without the fussiness. It features a very distinctive square-toe shape, which is also really popular and makes it work well for the office, evenings and occasion dressing. In other words, this is one versatile shoe!"

Ramondo is a real urban trendsetter. Its sporty and casual rawness give way to an ergonomic and clean design that wears well with jeans and a suit jacket – a key look right now. It has that vintage appeal. I see a lot of guys wearing it out to the local pub. Plus, you don’t see it, but there’s actually an elasticized ankle that gives it an even better fit. So yes, they score high on comfort too!"

So what’s your take on the guys and girls of Liverpool?

We’re always trying to be ahead of the game when it comes to fashion. It’s a bit of a sport here, really. Everyone competes to see who looks best. Many customers come in the shop with magazine cutouts and celebrity photos, asking where they can find these styles. Liverpool is actually considered “the Capital of Culture” and it definitely rings true.

What should someone be sure to check out when in town?

Music lovers should absolutely head to Korova. It’s the centre of Liverpool’s underground band scene. There’s live music 7 nights a week. You can get a drink and have a great meal too. It’s just a really cool place to hang out.

If you’re into fashion and self-expression, then Quiggins is a great place to spend an afternoon. It’s a maze-like bazaar filled with concessions selling vintage clothes and the occasional bit of kitsch. If you like the hunt for a hidden fashion treasure, then a visit here can snag some really great finds.

If you’re visiting this month and love art, the Liverpool Biennial is on. It’s an amazing festival featuring some truly innovative artists and forward-thinking installations. You can check out their website for a complete listing of events and exhibitions at www.biennial.com.

Thanks for the tour, we’re already planning our next trip!
